My brothers and sisters, in today’s Gospel, Jesus calls the first disciples outside his family. Remember, Mary and John the Baptist already had accepted the Truth and were believers. In today’s Gospel, Jesus calls Peter and his brother Andrew.

What a fascinating scene! Scripture doesn’t tell us specifically that Peter and Andrew had ever listened to Jesus preach. We don’t know how or why they were drawn to Jesus. We don’t know poor Zebedee’s reaction who presumably watched as his sons walked away from their family business. All we see in this Scripture passage are disjointed facts. But there is no doubt that there was something about Jesus that drew Peter and Andrew to him.

And their lives were never the same…

But their lives were not perfect. They weren’t not instantly prosperous because of their faith in Christ Jesus and their lives were not free of hardships. Nonetheless, the apostles and the disciples faced life – both the good and the bad.

By our baptism, we are each called to be disciples of Jesus Christ. But sometimes I feel as if don’t embrace my call – as if it’s that part of my life over there, but it has nothing to do with this part of my life over here. Do you ever feel that way? Let’s try to get our arms around the challenge before us.

To be a disciple means that we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior. This means that Jesus is must be first and foremost the most important person in our lives. We can test this by asking ourselves what we value most in this life.

To be a disciple means that we want to deepen our relationship with Jesus – to get to know him better. I’ll speak more about this in just a minute.

And to be a disciple means that we go out into the world to share the Good News of Jesus Christ beginning with the people we encounter each and every day, like our friends and family and the other people – acquaintances and strangers. That can be a tall order. So many of us strongly dislike looking foolish in front of other people. So, to be an effective disciple means that part of deepening our relationship with Jesus is to learn as much as we can about him, so that, for example, we don’t look foolish when we talk about him.

Ok let’s revisit the second point of discipleship: deepening our relationship with Jesus Christ. How can we deepen our relationship with Jesus? Well, let me ask you, how do you deepen your relationship with anyone? If you’ve ever been in a relationship, like your spouse, how did your relationship develop?

Well, generally we try to get to know them, right? We want to learn everything we can about the other person. We want to learn about their family and friends. We want to learn their likes and dislikes. We want to learn about their hopes and dreams.

So, how do we get to know Jesus? One of the first and best places to learn more about Jesus is to turn to Scripture itself. That’s part of the reason I think that Pope Francis asked us to set aside this third Sunday in Ordinary Time to turn our attention to Scripture. He tells us that we should never take Scripture for granted, “but instead to let ourselves be nourished by it, in order to acknowledge and live fully our relationship with Him and with our brothers and sisters.” <1>

My brothers and sisters, we use the occasion of this Sunday to begin a new or to continue our habit of reading a little piece of Scripture every day. Indeed, reading and reflecting on Scripture can challenge our spiritual growth, and that leads us to homework.

Homework! After having been nourished by the Word of God proclaimed and, in the Eucharist, I encourage you to reflect on the following two questions this week.

  1. He called them, and immediately they left their boat and their father and followed him. What do I need to leave behind to follow Jesus? To what is God calling me?
  2. He went around all of Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom, and curing every disease and illness among the people. How do I put my faith in action in my daily life? How can I serve those around me?

I think doing by our homework this week, it will deepen our sense of discipleship by helping us get to know Jesus a little better. Do you got it? Do you get it? Good! Now go make disciples! May Almighty God bless you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit! +Amen!

The Baptism of the Lord (Feast) Mass Readings

Today as the Christmas season comes to a close, we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus. We learn in Scripture that Jesus presents himself to John. And the baptism of Jesus begins his public ministry. Now, Jesus is without sin, so he doesn’t need to be baptized by John. Indeed, John tells him as much. Through Matthew’s account which, by the way, is the only place in Scripture where we find this dialogue between John and Jesus; we get some insight into these two cousins. I suggest to you to that reflecting just on the dialogue between John and Jesus can be a powerful experience. If you are interested in the prayerful practice of lectio divina, then I encourage you to spend some time with this particular dialogue in prayer.

Of course, the Baptism of the Lord reveals so much, and I’m sure you’ve received some excellent insights during the homily proclaimed at mass. So, in my reflection, I’d like to share what the Church teaches about the responsibility of living out a life of the baptized disciple of Jesus Christ.

Now Jesus did not need to be baptized. But he willingly enters the water as a sign of being united to the sinful people of Israel. He unites himself with sinners and gives us a clue to how he will bear the sins of the people when his mission comes to a climax on that scandalous cross. He inaugurates his ministry by stepping into the place of the sinner.

What does Jesus do next? It’s not a fair question because what happens next is not part of today’s reading, but come one, what happens next?

Does Jesus retire to some sacred place, the Temple perhaps, to pray and meditate twenty-four seven? No, Jesus is ready to proclaim the Good News, and he goes out into the world. Jesus doesn’t wait for the nations of the world to come to him; he goes out to the nations.

He goes out to “bring forth justice to the nations,” (Isaiah 42:1). Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus travels all over Palestine to “open the eyes of the blind, … bring out prisoners from confinement, and from the dungeon, those who live in darkness,” (Isaiah 42:7).

From the moment of his baptism, Jesus has been going out into the world. But he doesn’t do it alone. First, he goes out. Then he calls and send out Peter and Paul and the other apostles, and indeed other disciples like the 72 we read about in Luke 10:1-23. And now, my brothers and sisters, Jesus is sending you – each and every one of us who have been baptized according to our skills and abilities.

Now he doesn’t send you out alone. No! Jesus comes to you and he comes to me every day to fill us with the same Spirit that filled him at baptism. But there’s a catch. We need to be open to receiving Jesus every day.

You see, our baptism – our salvation – destines us to be united with God in heaven. And indeed, our baptism marks us with the seal of the Lord. But the Gospel does not teach that once saved, always saved. Our salvation, which is freely given, depends, as Scripture and St. Paul so often tell us, on our perseverance – our living and dying with Christ, (see Romans 6:8-13, 17-18; 2 Corinthians 4:11, Galatians 2:20; Colossians 2:20; Philippians 1:21; 2 Timothy 2:11, to name a few).

Part of what that means is that every day, you and I have a choice. Do we accept Jesus Christ as our Lord and Savior? Or will we today give into the luxuries and temptations this world has to offer? You see, if we believe – if we really believe that Jesus Christ is our Lord and Savior, then that should affect the way we live our lives each and every day. We sacrifice some of the comforts this world offers so that we, following the example of Jesus, Peter, Paul, the apostles and the first disciples, reach out to those who cannot come to church, those who do not come to church and those who will not come to church.

We reach out and share with the them the Good News of Jesus Christ! And how do we do that? By following Jesus’ example. We don’t hit them with the Bible or call them to repent. That might work for some, but for most people, following Jesus’ example, we need to meet people where they are. That’s how we start. Now, this might be the person working the cash register when you go to buy a cup of coffee on your way to work. It could be one of your coworkers who seems overly curious about what you do in church. And it could be the people you encounter if Jesus calls you to go out on a mission trip. As we begin each day, we should rise with joy and profess, “Here I am, Lord! Send me to share Your Good News!”

My brothers and sisters, the Baptism of the Lord that we remember today challenges each and every one of us. Are we living lives of the baptized? That’s a good question, and that leads us to homework! After being nourished by Word of God and by the Eucharist, I encourage you to reflect on the following two challenges this week.

  1. First, what does it mean to believe in a God that is not you? What does it mean to believe in your own holiness and goodness?
  2. Second, ask the Holy Spirit to settle on you, to give you courage and strength to share your faith with those you encounter.

I think doing our homework will help us strengthen our lives of as baptized disciples of Christ Jesus. Do you got it? Do you get it? Then go make disciples! May Almighty God bless you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit! +Amen!

Greetings on this Solemnity of Christ the King! I’m sure that many of you have heard excellent homilies today about Christ the King, perhaps tracing the history of kingship through Scripture to its manifestation in Jesus Christ, that is to say, in Jesus the anointed. So rather than attempt cover that ground again, I’d like to share with you my reflection about what the kingship of Jesus means.


But first, I’d like to admit that I have been a little bummed. I can’t specifically tell you how long I’ve felt this way, but it’s been a while. “Why,” you might ask? Well, I’ve probably spent a little too much time over the past year on social media. More recently, between politics in several countries and the fallout over the Pan Amazon Synod, I’ve been really bothered specifically by all the negative comments I’ve read.

Very often I’ve composed a response to one post or another, but of course I rarely actually post replies. I try to take a page from President Lincoln who, it is said, would write what he called a “hot letter” whenever he felt the urge to tell someone off. Once he finished emptying his anger into the letter, he would write on the bottom, “Never sent. Never signed.”, and then he’d file it away.

Now he is not the only person in history to write unsent “angry letters.” I have some examples in the notes to this podcast which you can find on the website www.deaconrudysnotes.org. <1> But I’ve got to tell you, the sheer volume of angry, accusatory and hurtful comments cast into cyberspace makes my heart hurt.

You see, it seems no one seems interested in solving problems. Everyone just seems focused on trying to win the argument. “What’s happening to Western society?” I wonder to myself. It can be all so overwhelming. Why does all of this bother me so much?

Well, when my faith teaches me that we are all created in the image and likeness of God, I believe it. I believe that Jesus is the fullness of humanity – everything God ever hoped for all of us. St. Paul tells us that Jesus is in us:
• 2 Corinthians 13:5, “Or do you not realize about yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you?”
• 2 Corinthians 4:6-7, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels…”
• Romans 8:10, “But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the spirit is alive because of righteousness.”
• Galatians 1:15-16, “But when it pleased God…to reveal His Son in me.”
• Galatians 2:20, “I am crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but it is Christ who lives in me.”


You get my drift?

This is why some of the mystics and saints go further than suggesting we should be like Jesus. They say, based on Scripture, that we are Jesus – each and every one of us. Think about that! The English mystic, Caryll Houselander describes the most incredible vision that hit her while she was traveling in the underground on a crowded train. Suddenly, she couldn’t see the people around except various form of Jesus Christ. The vision persisted when she emerged on the street and it continued for several days. In some people she found a suffering Jesus while in others a living, vibrant Jesus bursting with love and compassion. And still in others, sadly, a Jesus in the tomb of a lifeless soul. <2> Whoa!

For me, to read the overwhelmingly negative exchanges on various social media platforms, especially between supposed Christians, makes me feel…well it makes me wonder how a disciple must have felt standing in the crowd and watching helplessly as Jesus was convicted; as he carried his cross; as he was hung on the cross and as he died on the cross.

Sadly, the worst is not over yet. I suspect we will be witness to more online cruelty and intolerance as elections play out in the UK and the United States just like we’re seeing in Israel and Bolivia.

How is it that Christians can do this to one another? I think it’s because they haven’t accepted Jesus as King. You see, when we accept Jesus as King, he becomes king over every aspect of our entire lives, over our very souls. And our response to one another must first recognize Jesus in the other person and second come from a place firmly grounded in the Kingdom of God. Does that mean we can’t be patriots of our various nations? No, of course we can be patriotic, but our patriotism – our claim to our respective nations and indeed to everything in this world must come second, perhaps a distant second to our citizenship in the Kingdom of God.

If we are to live like Christ, then we need to realize that our Lord and King comes to us not on a bejeweled throne of gold, but on a wooden cross. His kingship isn’t turned inward toward power, wealth and a desire to always be right, but rather it is turned outward with love, compassion, healing, forgiveness, and non-violence. <3>

As we consider the great challenge of the Kingship of Jesus, I encourage us to use the upcoming season of Advent which is a time of preparation to begin again the business of self-evaluation and self-reflection; to reign-in our egos and to make sure that our lives are in service to Jesus Christ as we find him the people all around us.
Homework! As this liturgical season winds down, I encourage you to reflect on the following two questions:

  1. How can I be a channel of God’s service, comfort, healing and life in this world?
  2. Cool off before posting ANYTHING on ANY social media platform.

I think our homework this week might help us recognize Jesus in the people around us. Do you got it? Do you get it? Good! Now go make disciples! May Almighty God bless you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit! +Amen!
